Tāne Whakapiripiri

Last week we learnt about Tāne Whakapiripiri and what he represents. We learnt that he is the atua of the buildings that provide shelter to bring people together.  In Winter he works harder because the buildings keep people warm.

Ruma 3 2019 Who are we?

Who are we? 

This year we have got an amazing class of 26 akonga and an fantastic teacher called Whaea Heather. We are from Year 4 to Year 6 and come from all over Aotearoa, from the Far North to Bluff.
We are a special class because we speak te reo Māori and we also learn about  tikanga māori.

We are into football, rugby, swimming, chromebooks, te reo māori, touch, netball, gaming, league, basketball, art, pāngarau, building and constructing, whānau, eating, kapahaka and heaps more.
We are a digital 1:1 classroom and we use our chromebooks everyday. We love to Learn, Create and Share everything we do.

Ngā mihi Ruma 3

Swimming in Ruma 3

WALT float on our backs.

Today Ruma 3 enjoyed the swimming pool and we were all able to float on our backs. Whaea Heather was really pleased with our progress. It was a nice way to cool down as well.

Designing our classroom treaty.

Today we read the book The Tree Hut Treaty written by Wiremu Grace.  After discussing it we realised that we could all contribute ideas to create our own classroom treaty. We worked in groups brainstorming our ideas of things that are important for our classroom to be a safe and happy place for learning and then we shared them. Next week we will write up our new classroom treaty.

 

Mihi Whakatau

Kia ora  koutou

Today we had a mihi whakatau to welcome the new tamariki and whānau to Te Mahuri Mānuka (Hornby Primary School). It went really well with lots of whānau turning up. First Whaea Rovena did a karanga and Whaea Christine replied. Then Matua Hector started a haka and we all followed. It was amazing. After that we had 3 kaikōrero and waiata finishing with a hongi and some kai.

What a great way to start the year.

Tūakana Tēina Ngā Atua Māori

Relating to others
Participating and contributing.

This term we are doing some inquiry research into some of the Atua Māori.
We are working as tuakana / teina and today we have been looking at Papatūanuku.

Kūtai, Kamokamo and Karakia

WAL about where different kai comes from and linking this knowledge back to one of the karakia that we do.

First we brainstormed as a class our wahi kai and then worked in small groups to write down as many examples as we could. We added these to our poster, which is now displayed next to our karakia on the wall.

We were lucky enough to also cook up some kūtai as not all of the class had tried them and we watched them open as they were cooked. We also had some kamokamo too which was delicious!

We are going to clean the kūtai shells and use the to help scrape the harakeke to make muka.
